This November, Origins Foster Care is hosting an online information session designed to give you a thorough introduction to fostering, with insights from experienced foster carers and the chance to connect with Origins’ expert team.
Our info session will be a warm and welcoming space for anyone considering fostering. We’ll share more about the vital role foster carers play in the lives of children in care and offer you an opportunity to ask questions, gain knowledge, and see if fostering might be right for you.
What is Foster Care in Ireland?
Foster care in Ireland involves taking care of a child who, for a variety of reasons, cannot live with their birth family either temporarily or, in some cases, longer term. Children enter foster care when they need a safe, stable, and supportive environment. This might be due to challenges in their home, illness in the family, or temporary family difficulties.
Foster carers play a critical role by providing these children with a nurturing home environment where they can feel secure and valued. At Origins Foster Care, we focus on ensuring that each child receives compassionate, quality care from carers who are trained, carefully selected, and supported throughout their journey.
Who Can Become a Foster Carer?
We believe that fostering is open to a wide range of people who are ready to offer a caring and stable home. To be eligible, applicants should be at least 25 years old, reside in Ireland, have suitable accommodation with a spare room, and possess a genuine desire to make a difference in a child’s life. Each applicant completes an assessment, including health checks and Garda vetting, and attends essential training to understand the needs of children who have faced adversity. This training helps foster carers develop the skills to form healthy attachments and provide meaningful support to children who need it most.
What Support Does Origins Foster Care Offer?
At Origins, we are committed to supporting our foster carers every step of the way. Our carers benefit from continuous access to training, a fostering allowance to support the child’s needs, and a dedicated link worker to provide guidance and support tailored to their unique placement. We know fostering can be both rewarding and challenging, so we offer a full range of supports for to ensure our carers never feel alone – including peer networking groups, monthly training sessions, family events, and a 24/7 support line available all year round.
